Isle Of Skye

The Isle of Skye is the northernmost part of the Inner Hebrides islands of Scotland. From above, the islands look like a wing that spreads out from the mountainous region that is dominated by the Cuillin. The Cuillin is at the centre of the series of bays and peninsulas that radiate out into the open waters. Some say that the island does not really look like wings – but more of like a lobster claw that seeks to snap at the island of Lewis and Harris.

About the Isle of Skye

What is great about the Skye is that it boasts a rich history and how the isle has evidence of each one.

For instance, there are dinosaur footprints that can be found on the Staffin shore. You can see these fossils in the Dinosaur Museum in Staffin. If you walk along the shores of the Isle of Skye, you might find more fossils of belemnites, gryphaea, and ammonites.Of course, you will also find evidence of the brochs what were built by the Picts more than 2000 years ago. These are round and hollow towers that can only be found in Scotland. It is unclear how these were used. Some say that it might be used as a lookout point because of their location and how they are usually within sight of another broch.

Visiting Scotland will not be complete if you do not get to know the clans and the castles. The Skye will not disappoint when it comes to that. The oldest inhabited castle is the Dunvegan Castle – owned by the MacLeods, one of the clans in Skye. What used to be a thatched house during the 12th century is now bigger after going through massive extensions and renovations.

You will also find the ruins of the Duntulm Castle of the MacDonald clan on the cliff edge in the Isle of Skye. Apparently, a baby fell onto the rocks from the castle window. The clan then moved to the south in a much safer location.

There are other notable clans that lived and thrived in this area in Scotland. You can also see old cathedrals like the ruins of St. Columba, the Bishops of the Isles’ cathedral church. Other interesting churches include the Trumpan, Dunvegan, and Kilchrist.

There are also abandoned houses and villages that can be explored. Some of these structures used to be summer homes of the wealthy clans in Scotland. According to the records, some of these villages were abandoned because they were too far from schools or modes of transportation. Other villages were abandoned by forced because the landlord wanted to use the land for something else – but the village just lay in ruins.

All of these make the Isle of Skye a pretty interesting place to visit. However, there are more reasons for you to come over to explore the land.
